Bienvenue!

At Wanborough Primary School we believe that the learning of a modern foreign language should be enriching, provide enjoyment and form the basis for future language learning. It also provides pupils with the opportunity to experience other cultures and broaden their understanding of the world.

All Key Stage 2 pupils are entitled to one hour of foreign language learning in school. Wanborough Primary recognises the value of this and provides age appropriate modern foreign language learning opportunities for all children.

The focus language at Wanborough is French. Years 3-6 are taught formally, for one hour a week, by Mrs Hook, Higher Level Teaching Assistant, BA (Hons) French. French has also been introduced to Foundation 2 and Key Stage 1 through songs and games.

As well as the formal teaching of French, teachers and children are encouraged to practise the language where possible during the school day, such as taking the register, counting and PE games. We participate in eTwinning projects with other schools across Europe to share ideas, cultural differences and practise language learning.

We understand the importance of celebrating diverse languages and cultures from around the world.

We are lucky to have a link with Ecole du lac in St Cyr, near Poitiers. In 2020 we were successful in our second Erasmus+ application, (made through the British Council and European Union) which has allocated both schools significant funding to our "Small Steps for a Better World" project.

French is also one of the languages featured in our annual Worldbeat Song Contest.

Wanborough pupils and staff also have access to Linguascope membership at school and at home. There are a range of languages available to learn. Please encourage your children to play the Linguascope games at home. Remember that everyone should keep their login details secure and not share them.

We have a page with common phrases spoken by native speakers in French and English to allow children to practise pronunciation. Phrase of the fortnight page
