Visit to the Houses of Parliament
On Monday 19th September the School Council members visited the Houses of Parliament to find out how it works and to explore aspects of democracy and government.
They were given a tour around both the House of Lords, including the amazing gold throne that The Queen sits in to Open Parliament, and the House of Commons.
They found out about the role of the MPs and Lords and of the Speaker of the house.
Then they visited Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the Houses of Parliament, built in 1097! This was the only place that photos were permitted.
After standing outside to hear Big Ben strike 12, they returned to the Education Centre where they were split into two groups and explored their knowledge of government, as well deciding how they would campaign to try to persuade government and the public to support different proposals.
The School Council will be feeding this information back to their classes and the school in the coming weeks.
