Acorn Class - Term 2
Continuing with the winter theme, Acorns made some snowmen bookmarks with Ms Hingley. They used their fingers to add different sized fingerprints. Once dried, they then added snowmen features such as hats, arms and noses.
Last week, we continued our work on winter and thought about the wildlife during this season. We learnt a new word, 'migrate' and also that it is harder for the birds that do stay in the country to find food because the ground is harder. We decided to create some bird feeders to help them.
Acorn class have been working hard during their phonics lessons this term. They have learnt so many sounds and are becoming more confident with segmenting and blending when reading. We went on a phonics hunt around the classroom, searching for CVC words and writing them down on our worksheets.
SNOW MUCH FUN!
Acorn class enjoyed putting on their wellington boots and playing in the snow! We talked about the seasons and different kinds of weather. Whilst out in the snow, we all tried to catch snowflakes and talk about how it feels. Then we made snowballs and walked around the track.
To celebrate 'Children in Need' day, the whole school dressed up in spots and as superheroes. Acorn class completed a variety of activities throughout the day:
- A Superhero active break
- Design their own superhero masks
- Decorate a Pudsey bear
- Decorate leaves with spots
We have had a fun packed start to the term, learning all about different celebrations.
First we learnt all about Guy Fawkes and bonfire night. We watched a video all about why it is celebrated and how to be safe around fireworks. Then we created our own firework pictures using straws, paint and glitter. Later, we created our own rockets using tissue paper for the flames and paint and glitter for the decoration and some of us used shapes to create more rockets!
Later on in the week we learnt all about the Hindu celebration of Diwali. During our KS1 assembly, Miss Corbyn told us all about why and how it is celebrated. Back in class, we watched a short video showing some children explaining how they celebrate at home. They talked about all the ways they welcome the Goddess Lakshmi by cleaning their homes, wearing new clothes, having a special feast, lighting special diya lamps, watching fireworks and creating Rangoli patterns using rice and powder. We created our own Rangoli patterns out of paint and collaging and we also used brown pens to add mehndi patterns onto hands, similar to henna.
