Oak Class - Term 2
In recent English sessions, the children have been recapping the subject, verb and object in main clauses, before using this knowledge to identify each within a given sentence - we also took this time to consolidate the understanding of determiners. Today, we used the children's understanding of subject, verb and object to understand when sentences are written in the active or passive voice. We looked at various examples, first identifying the verb and then the position of the subject within the sentences given, before deciding if they were in the active or passive voice. To practise swapping sentences between active and passive, the children played a board game in teams, which encouraged them to redraft sentences in the opposite voice.
Oak - Active and Passive Voice
Over the past two weeks, the children have been researching 'Life in Britain During WW2'. Different groups were tasked with researching: The Blitz and Blackout, Women's Jobs, Evacuation and Rationing. After gathering information and making their notes, the children worked in their pairs - or threes - to produce a PowerPoint that they presented to the class. The rest of the class then made bullet-pointed notes on each area, which have now been used to create a double-page spread on 'Life in Britain During WW2'.
During the first week of Term 2, Oak Class started to revisit their knowledge of their new text type - Newspaper Reports. The children began by recapping the 5Ws used throughout newspaper reports, with a particular focus on the orientation paragraph. To consolidate this, they picked out the 5Ws from a range of orientations. In the next session, the children revised the structural and linguistic features of a newspaper report before exploring newspaper articles within the First News newspaper for children.
