Pinecone Class - Term 2

Settling Back In

The children have made a fantastic start to the term! They’ve settled back into school life quickly and have thrown themselves into learning with great enthusiasm. Some children have achieved their first reading award for 50 reads which is fantastic news.

Remembrance Day

Across different lessons, we’ve been learning about the importance of Remembrance Day. The children created beautiful poppy artwork, now proudly displayed on our classroom windows. We also discussed the meaning behind the red and purple poppies and took time to remember both the fallen and those currently serving in the armed forces.

PE – Dance

This week in PE, the children enjoyed fun activities and games during their dance lessons. These sessions focused on teamwork while helping them develop skills such as balance and movement.

Science – Food Chains

Last week in science, we began exploring food chains and learned how different species depend on each other for survival. The children were fascinated by the connections between animals and their habitats.

English – Exploring Expanded Noun Phrases

This term in English, we’ve been diving into the world of expanded noun phrases! The children have been learning how to make their writing more descriptive by using two adjectives to describe a noun. For example, instead of writing “the cat,” they might write “the fluffy, playful cat.”

They’ve really enjoyed experimenting with different combinations and sharing their ideas with the class. This week, we’ll take it a step further by using expanded noun phrases in full sentences and creative writing pieces. It’s a fantastic way to bring their stories to life and make their writing more vivid and exciting!

Week 2:

What an exciting week it’s been in Year 2!

In English, the children have been diving into the world of expanded noun phrases, using them to create vivid sentences for a diary entry written from the perspective of Lila’s grandfather in Lila and the Secret of Rain. Their creativity really shone through!

In PSHE, we explored the theme of celebrating differences and discussed why jobs should never be stereotyped by gender. The children shared thoughtful ideas and showed great respect for one another’s views.

To round off the week, Year 2 joined in the fun for Children in Need by coming to school in their cosy pyjamas! It was wonderful to see everyone supporting such an important cause. And the excitement isn’t over yet—they’re looking forward to enjoying Pudsey toast and hot chocolate on Monday!

Thank you for your continued support in making these experiences so special for the children.

Week 3:

Thank You for Attending Parents’ Evening

A big thank you to everyone who came to Parents’ Evening last week! It was wonderful to meet you all and talk about what your child has been learning.

What We’ve Been Learning in Pinecone Class

Religious Education:
This week, we explored sacred places and focused on what is inside a church. The children enjoyed a cut-and-stick activity where they named and placed different artefacts within a church setting. Next week, we’ll continue our learning by discovering what makes a mosque special.

Geography & History:
Our topic on hot and cold places is getting even more exciting! We’ve started learning about Antarctic explorer Robert Scott and his brave team, who raced to the South Pole—only to find out that the Norwegian team had arrived first.

Maths:
We’ve been working on adding by making 10 and learning number bonds to 100 using tens. You can support this at home by asking questions like:
“If I have 5, what do I need to make 10?”
The children are becoming very confident with their number bonds!

English:
In English, we’ve been learning how to use coordinating conjunctions such as and, or, and but. We’ve also practised using past and present tense, which the children will apply in their upcoming Big Write.

Thank You for Your Support

We truly appreciate all the encouragement you give your children at home — it makes a big difference! If you have any questions or would like to know more about what we’re learning, please feel free to get in touch. We’re looking forward to another exciting week of learning together!

This Week in Pinecone Class

We’ve had a busy and exciting week of learning!

PSHE: The children have been thinking about an important question: Why does bullying happen, and what can we do if it happens to us? They shared thoughtful ideas and learned ways to stay safe and support others.

Music: Our budding musicians explored a variety of instruments and percussion. They had great fun experimenting with sounds and even played along to a tune!

History: We continued our fascinating research into Robert Scott and his team of explorers. The children worked hard to fill in missing parts of the story and deepen their understanding of this incredible journey.

PE: In dance lessons, the children showcased their mini performances and gave each other helpful feedback. It’s wonderful to see their confidence growing!

Maths: Number bonds are becoming second nature! This week we moved on to subtraction. If you’d like to help at home, try asking your child to subtract a number from 10 or 15—it’s a great way to practise.
